![[User Picture]](http://p-userpic.livejournal.com/37400399/4695596) [Link] | Preview night at San Diego Comic Con. I am having a terrific time - and it is busy and noisy. I scored some stuff for Sabrina, so she'll be way happy when I come home. I wandered around the Dealers room making notes about what booths to get back to - since as we were Dealers we weren't suppose to be buying anything till the attendees get a chance. Tiered.
We saw some familiar faces. Come by and say hey - we are almost under the Fantasy Illustrated sign. 4200s.
April should arrive tomorrow.
I did have badges for Mike and Dawn. Good.
Hope this entry isn't too disjointed. I am very dis-jointed right now.

Denvention Schedule I was a bit late getting into programming at the upcoming Worldcon, so I'm only on one item. But it's a reading, which makes me happy. My reading is at 5:30 PM on Friday, August 8th. Come on by, I'll have treats!
Hmm, perhaps I can revise "Human Racing" in time. For those of you in my writing groups, that was the hamster-ball cities story.

![[User Picture]](http://p-userpic.livejournal.com/37400399/4695596) [Link] | I am packed, and -of course- I wonder what it is I have forgotten. Or what I will suddenly discover that I desperately need when I am miles and miles from home. I grabbed my cell phone, and had to figure out what the number is so I can give it to other people.
I think I will kick back and do some D&D work today. I am still working on a 4th Edition book for DarkFawn - and I can see that if I add exploits to the fighters (an idea I like) then there's a whole lotta work for me to do. The fighter abilities go on alot about movement and I am not using that in my game. I also will wind up with more things that the character can do at higher levels, so I need to design a whole lot to keep up the level load. I wasn't going to bring a gaming notebook with me to California - but now, I will.

![[User Picture]](http://p-userpic.livejournal.com/37400399/4695596) [Link] | Went to see Weird Al over the weekend - and he was great! As always. He did the Jedi songs, Fat, White and Nerdy... He had all the video clips. The music was great. He has a new encore song that is from one of his video bits - a cell phone song. Way cool.
Having my sister down was excellent. We did the Ann Arbor art fair, and the walking in the rain was no real problem. Here are some of the biz cards I picked up from artists I liked: lauriesharkus.com - sculptures jewelry10.com - whimsical pins loftprints.com - whimsical flat art - graphic! Winderful nickwroblewski.com - woodblock prints deborahfalls.com - painted flowers on silk
Getting the last few things done before heading out to the Comic con. If you are going, some by and say hi. It's such a big show, I want people to know I'm there. Sue Van Camp and April Lee will be sharing a booth with me in the fantasy artist section. Don't get lost!

hiking owl's head I finally got up North for a hike yesterday. We hiked a smaller mountain, Mt. Major in June, which is in the lakes region and had some great views of the lakes and some mountains. However, besides that I hadn't been up North. Every time we thought of doing a hike, the forecast would call for a chance of showers, so it wasn't worth the drive. Instead we've stayed local and I've hiked Mt. Monadnock several times this year. We've hiked more of the side trails, to explore a couple of trails we hadn't done before and to keep away from the crowds as much as possible.
So yesterday I finally made it up to the White Mountains for the first time this season. Terry and I hiked Owl’s Head. It's a long hike so we had to get up at 3 AM to drive up there and hit the trail early. It was an 18-mile hike which took us 13 hours.
It was eight miles just to get to the base of the mountain. The first three miles were easy and flat, on an old rail bed. After that the trail was still fairly flat, but it got more rustic. It had rained the night before, so there was a lot of mud on the trail. There were also several stream crossings, two of which required us to take out shoes off. On the way back we didn’t bother and just walked through to get our boots wet. I slipped and fell sitting down in the water on the way back.
The trail up the mountain was only a mile, but it was steep and straight up. It went up a slide trail with loose rocks, and wet rocks further up. I was dying and had to take many stops; it was very slow going for me. Terry was ahead of me, but even he was feeling it. We both made it to the top though, even though we got passed by several other hikers.
The weather forecast had called for partly sunny weather in the 90s. Instead it was mostly cloudy with some sun here and there. It also started raining as we were coming down the mountain. Luckily it didn’t last long to make the trail even worse, but it rained off and on for our trip back, so we got wet. The one saving grace of the weather that it wasn't brutally hot and humid, so that was something.
It was a hard, rough hike, and I was annoyed through parts of it, but it was a good accomplishment to get through it and another peak off my list. It’s also a hike that I don’t ever need to do again. Apart from some nice views of the Franconia Notch mountains as we were going up the slide trail, there was no other payoff, as the summit was covered by trees.
I was wiped out, sore and tired last night, so I took a shower and crashed as soon as we got home. This morning my muscles were still stiff, but I'm not feeling too bad now.

![[User Picture]](http://p-userpic.livejournal.com/37400399/4695596) [Link] | My sister is coming in today, and we're all going to see Weird Al tonight. We've got cheap seats on the lawn. I hope he does the geek song, but I know whatever he does will be great. There was one time we went to see him at a venue next to a bowling alley... shudder - but he was great.
The Ann Arbor Art Fair is this weekend too. We might go, although it's suppose to be hot and or rainy.

John Ball Zoo Worked on some more of my back log of photos today. And that means that you get spammed with yet more animal photos...cue evil laughter.
The same day that we went to the Binder Park Zoo in Michigan in May, we also hit the John Ball zoo. It is a small zoo but I was very impressed with most of the enclosures. The one exception I can remember off the top of my head was the tiger enclosure. Too small and not enough of interest for the cat. Considering the other big cat enclosures I'm going to assume this is an old one that will be updated before too long. Overall an excellent small zoo with a nice collection. Well worth the visit!
We hit this one just as it was opening, so the animals were generally nice and active.
One of my fav photos from this zoo. It's one of the photos that makes me go, "Wow. Did I really take that!!!" It's almost abstract. The lights and thrown shadows, the colours. It makes my design sense swoon!

Lots and lots more under the cut. Beware any dial ups!

Commission and Polaris Polaris (still referred to most as Toronto Trek) has come and gone another year. I ran the print shop in the art show as usual and had a great time. Lots of chatting with folks, hanging out with friends and having a generally relaxing weekend. Polaris is great cause I get to see all my old friends from SF fandom who I don't get to see too often. It's like old home week! One amusing thing was chatting with my old and good friend Larry De Souza who draws the popular and awesome on-line comics, "Looking For Group" and "Least I Could Do." People kept sidling up nervous of approaching him and then going all fanboy. For those who have never met him, he's one of the sweetest, most approachable guys on the planet and it was amusing to watch people so nervous of talking with him:)
The economy and the price of gas seems to have really affected people's spending this year and the con seemed smaller. Hopefully it will pick up again next year. Still managed to make a nice bundle in the print shop. That meant that I had to spend time this week restocking for Guelph Art on the Streets this weekend. Not a bad thing but I've been doing restocking each week for six weeks now and I'm starting to cringe at the sight of my matt cutter:) So, I will be at the Geulph Art on the Streets show this weekend, booth #19. Please let the weather be better than last year! Drop by and say hi if you're there.
The street fair is my last show for three weeks. Yeah! Next up with be Gencon in mid August. Looking foward to my annual camping trip, some time on the weekends to hit the farmer's market and go dragonfly and butterfly photo hunting with Marg.
Oh yes, and I miss FA. Come back!
So many shows in so many weeks has put a severe dent in my output but I did manage to get one commission done up this week. It's under a cut due to it's adult nature. Not Work Safe!

![[User Picture]](http://p-userpic.livejournal.com/37400399/4695596) [Link] | Amid all my coloring of this dark court fey, I made the mistake of making her too blue. Candy blue, red-white-and-blue blue. Obviously, I corrected it - but it's frustrating when I knew I was entering a dangerous color choice and then both husband and daughter notice. Work, work, work.
Today might be sugar glider day. Poor Tina is dashing about like a crazed maniac, and they might come by plane. Being 'rescued' animals, we have no record of their vaccinations or anything. Dave went out and bought some creepy crawlers to feed to the gliders. Now I have bugs in the house and no gliders.... yick yick yick. I told Dave and Sabrina that it was their job to deal with the super meal worms - NOT mine.

Ж-Men...but not the ones you might expect! This week LJ Russia launched Ж-Men, a new comedy series about superheroes, inspired by the LJ communities dedicated to superheros, comics and cartoons. The title's "Ж" comes from ЖЖ, the nickname for LiveJournal in Russia.
Ж-Men's script is written by a group of LJ enthusiasts who also happen to be television professionals. Who knew? Following the premiere, five more episodes will be broadcast over the next two weeks. We hope you find the series fresh and enjoyable.
This is, of course, an experiment for LiveJournal. As always, we'd love to hear what you think!

![[User Picture]](http://p-userpic.livejournal.com/37400399/4695596) [Link] | I boxed up stock for San Diego Comic con and sent it on to Glen. It costs me more money to send a box - than it does to just take an extra suitcase on the airplane. And it was less pounds than the airlines would get me for. The only plus is that it's away, and I don't have to worry about it (except that I will. The guy at UPS says, 'oh, no extra insurance', leaving me to wonder about extortion and why they/he believes that his company won't take proper normal care of my package). I also wonder if I will play 'stuff the suitcase' anyway, and wind up with the two on the plane anyway! *sigh*
Got a little dark fairy in sketch. I'm having one of those 'I can draw, but is it a good picture' moments. They come more often lately.
Naiad (the white kitty) got out again yesterday. oh yeay. Sabrina was looking for the mailman (in hopes of Sugar Gliders) and the cat obviously loved her adventure from last week. Out she bolted and the chase began. She should be easy to spot - she's white! But, she found a hole she could get into (a den/warren/hole) and she was all the way in. I went for the hose... but Sabrina coaxed her out (with a stick and the lazer pointer - mostly the stick). All cats are indoors now - and the Sugar Gliders are due on Thursday.

Muppets! The first and best (and eponymous) Muppet Movie came along in 1979 before VCRs were affordable. My friend Bobb worked as a projectionist at the time, so I asked him to record the audio for me directly from the projector. I wound up with two audio cassettes, and even now can recite great swathes of the movie. I've never done this with any other movie; partly through a matter of timing and partly due to my love of this movie.
It was, therefore, a pleasure to hear a recent episode (mp3) of The Muppetcast, a podcast for all things muppetrical. Host Steve Swanson ran almost all the audio from the movie, interspersed with an interview with muppet writer/historian Craig Shemin. I found out where the swamp in the first scene had previously been seen, I learned how they handled some of the special effects, and more.
While we're on the subject of the Muppets, Fongsongs is posting cover songs from all of Jim Henson's projects this week. Also, word is there will be a new Muppet Movie that harks back to the first trilogy.

![[User Picture]](http://p-userpic.livejournal.com/37400399/4695596) [Link] | Did a ton of things yesterday - including getting this second griff-a-keet done. The laundry pile of clean clothes is high, there is mat board to be cut, there will be a place to crash for the San Diego Comic Con, I have prints made, Some of the 4thE spells have been typed into my computer, there is fruit in the house, and more.
While off for the weekend in Canada, I discovered they are a land without Slurpees. I stopped in several places searching for my elixir of life and there were none. Oh woa is me! I went out sunday and there was nothing. Pity me. When I crossed the boarder back into 'civilization', the first place we stopped - their machine was down; but the gas station had a machine full and glorious. Yesterday, I had two frozen cokes - just to sooth my soul.
